About BottleBuddy

BottleBuddy is a hyper-local peer-to-peer marketplace for empty deposit-refundable bottles. People who have empties at home post them; neighbours willing to make the trip to a supermarket pick them up and keep the refund. Hyper-local (≤ 5 km radius), privacy-first (exact address only revealed after match), free to use.

The app launches in Malta first — under the BCRS scheme (€0.10 per container) — and expands across the EU.

Built mobile-native (iOS + Android) on React Native, fully GDPR-compliant, EU-hosted infrastructure.

One-line description

BottleBuddy connects neighbours so empty deposit bottles become cash without the trip to the supermarket.

Founder quote

"Every household has empties piling up — but the supermarket run is a hassle. BottleBuddy lets the deposit go to whoever is willing to make that trip, neighbour to neighbour. It's good for recycling, good for whoever needs the cash, and zero effort for whoever doesn't."

Why now

Malta's BCRS launched in 2022 and currently handles ~200 million containers/year — but the friction of returning them to a supermarket is the same as everywhere else in Europe. As deposit-refund schemes expand across the EU (Germany since 2003, Croatia since 2025, the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive forcing every member state to adopt one by 2029), the gap between "I have empties" and "I want the refund" only grows. BottleBuddy turns that gap into a low-friction neighbour-to-neighbour transaction.
